The 25th amendment has ended up (either intentionally or unintentionally) as the only sensible solution to the problems in Michael Wolff’s Fire and Fury looking this is bad news for Trump. Very bad news!
The 25th amendment basically sets the pace for a mechanism through which a President who has been deemed unfit for office, unhealthy or incapacitated, or simply unable to fulfill his Presidential duties can be removed from office. Then it also caters for a smooth transition and succession.
The book paints a picture of a President so obsessed with tweeting and failing to carry out his Presidential duties. It also paints a picture of a President struggling with mental health issues but failing to make a responsible decision to seek treatment or healthcare. Other health professionals say Trump could be exhibiting early symptoms of dementia. The fact that he lives in denial and has failed to take matters of his health seriously is also a cause of concern.
“He is like an 11 year old child,” Steve Bannon is quoted to have said and many White House staffers have voiced the same concern, explaining that the President is like an attention seeking child and all he loves is to be praised and flattered. It’s all in the book for anyone to read.
Trump does not read and get bored quickly and according to reports, he doesn’t even know what the 25th amendment is and signs documents without fully reading them or knowing the contents.
A Fox News opinion piece notes below that:
In December, Yale psychiatry professor Dr. Bandy X. Lee met with more than a dozen members of Congress to discuss Trump’s mental state.
Lee edited “The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump,” which includes the assessments of 27 psychiatrists and mental health experts of the president’s mental health. Lee herself has stated that Trump’s tweets give us a window into a man who is unraveling.
To remove the president from office under the 25th Amendment, Section 4 would have to be invoked. It allows the vice president to become acting president if it’s determined the president is incapable of discharging his duties.
This section is meant to handle situations where the president is incapacitated – such as due to an injury, a stroke or dementia. But apparently, Trump’s opponents see it as an escape clause.
In fact, there’s already potential legislation, promoted by Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., to make it easier to look into the president’s mental state under the 25th Amendment. The bill has approximately 50 co-sponsors.
Michael Wolff has admitted that he thinks his book could speed up the process of removing Trump from the Presidency.
White House lawyers are reportedly working day and night trying to contain the fall out from this book and analyzing the full text of the 25th amendment.
