Hurricane Irma is expected to make landfall in Palm Beach, Florida and one of the most expensive and expensive properties that is in the path of the mighty hurricane is Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago where he likes to vacation and play Golf every other weekend.
Experts say Mar-a-lago is likely to have been built with reinforced concrete but that was many years ago and even then the current gathering storm,Hurricane Irma is stronger and heavier than previous storms.
“According to the weather projections and weather analysis, Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago could be easily flattened and totally destroyed in this hurricane,” said Wes Patrick, a real estate developer in Florida who is together with his family already on the move getting away from Florida until the storm is over.
Mar-a-Lago is one of Trump’s favourite retreats where he likes to go to play Golf every other weekend and he would be devastated if it is destroyed in the hurricane. Trump has nick named Mar-a-Lago the “winter White House” and has hosted the President of China and the Prime Minister of Japan at the Florida Mansion and golf club. Trump’s frequent trips to Mar-a-lago are very costly and the most conservative estimates by GQ put Trump’s trips at $2 million per trip.
The President’s favourite property has been at the centre of controversies after ethics lawyers blamed Trump for using his own properties for Government duties hence making the tax payer fund his vacations and retreats at his own golf clubs and hotels. It has become a classic case of conflict of interest where the President invites foreign Presidents to be hosted at his own properties and hence the Government bill goes straight into his pocket and businesses.
Under normal circumstances, a sitting President would host foreign dignitaries and diplomats at official Government facilities like at the White House or Camp David or at least at any 5 star hotels and resorts where he has no financial or any other interests.
Trump has failed to understand that and continues to flout the rules.
Hurricane Matthew is headed to Florida and expected to hit landfall anytime soon. Trump supporters and Evangelical Christians have started a “prayer page” on Facebook sending prayers so that Trump’s property is protected during the storm. They have also prayed that Trump can overcome his “enemies” who want to see him fail.
